Notes: The fruit for Gamble Family Vineyards Petite Sirah comes from a very special heritage vineyard in Saint Helena. The vines were planted 45 years ago. We are fortunate to benefit from the grower’s planting decision back in 1964. The vines are gnarly, head-trained (no trellis wires) and dry-farmed on well drained soils. They have battle scars and character aplenty. Due to old age and the absence of drip irrigation, yields are naturally very low, less than 2 tons per acre. Flavors are concentrated in to this very small quantity of grapes.
The Petite Sirah’s inky black cherry color points to its powerful frame and enticing flavors. Roasted coffee, cola and spiced cherry aromas lead into flavors of black raspberry, plum, fennel and cardamom. As is usual with this wine the bold fruit flavors are balanced by the earthier smoked meat notes. Big dusty round tannins ensure that this heavyweight wine will age gracefully for 8 to 10 years.
