Distinctive earthy, mushroom and smoke around spicy vanilla and black cherry
VARIETAL: Old Vine Syrah
APPELLATION: St Helena
VINEYARD: Heritage Sites
NOTES: The fruit for our Gamble Family Vineyards Syrah comes from a very special heritage vineyard in Saint Helena. The vines were planted over 30 years ago and at the time Syrah was almost non-existent in the Napa Valley. We are fortunate to benefit from the grower’s bold decision. The vines are gnarly, head-trained (no trellis wires) and dry-farmed on well drained soils. They have battle scars and character aplenty. Due to old age and the absence of drip irrigation, yields are naturally very low, at 1½ tons per acre. Flavors are concentrated into this very small quantity of grapes.
Aromas of cocoa nib, black cherry and candied bacon. Dry, balanced acid, full and round with firm but integrated chocolaty tannins, framing flavors of white pepper, pastrami, cardamom together with dark black raspberry, rosemary and dusty clay. The wine will continue to evolve over the next 6 to 8 years.
