PEPPER HILL VINEYARD Appellation: Carneros, Napa Valley Acres: ~5 Soils: The soils at Pepper Hill are a mixture of marine deposits, clay and loam. They are so depleted and limited in fertility that for many years the site was considered fit for sheep and little else. But in that laid real opportunity. Climate: Carneros is usually cool, foggy and windy. Pepper Hill faces north and west at the northern limits of Carneros making it slightly warmer than the rest of the appellation. The protected location and afternoon sun help ripen the Cabernet Franc and protect it from higher than usual susceptibility to shatter during bloom. Varieties: Cabernet Franc Comments: While Carneros has a well-deserved reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the region also produces Cabernet Franc with striking aromatic qualities. Grapes Used In: 2005 Paramount Red Wine.
